The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities for computer software engineers will grow much faster than the average occupation through 2014.  In addition, opportunities for computer software engineers are expected to be one of the fastest growing of all occupations.  The rapid growth is due to the fact that organizations and businesses rely on the integration of technology in order to stay ahead of the competition and to work in the most efficient manner possible. 

According to he United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for computer application software engineers in May 2004 was $74,980.  The highest earners were those who worked for software publishers, earning a median annual income of $79,930.  Those in the insurance carrier industry made the least amount of money, earning a median annual income of $68,440.

Computer systems engineers working in the software realm earned more than those working in applications.  In May 2004, their median annual income was $79,740.  Those working in the area of scientific research and development earned the most, with a median annual income of $91,390.  Those earning the least were employed in the wired telecommunication field, with a median annual income was $74,370.
